The Beverly Hills Hotel, aka "The Pink Lady," is officially 100 years old, and the movie-star magnet is also an official landmark. Here are some snapshots from "The Pink Lady's" history, featuring cameos from Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and other famous faces from nearby Hollywood.

The Pink Palace changed owners three times over the course of the 1980s, and in the early ‘90s, the hotel had a facelift, complete with a fresh coat of salmon paint. Architect Paul R. Williams gave the hotel a pink-and-green palette in the 1940s.

Amid Boycott Of Beverly Hills Hotel, City Confronts Brunei Over Sharia Law

The Beverly Hills Hotel, which is owned by the Sultan of Brunei, is seen during a protest over Brunei's strict sharia law penal code in Beverly Hills, California May 5, 2014. REUTERS/Jonathan Alcorn

BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - The City of Beverly Hills voted unanimously on Tuesday to pressure the government of Brunei to divest the Beverly Hills Hotel, the pink-hued haunt of the Hollywood set, after the small country's enactment of sharia law prompted protests.

Comedians Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno and British entrepreneur Richard Branson have been the most prominent figures to advocate shunning the hotel and its bungalows, a favored locale for the Hollywood elite since it opened a century ago.

The resolution urges Brunei to divest its ownership of the hotel, and any other properties it owns within Beverly Hills, and condemns it and other countries that operate under Islamic criminal law.

Emotions were high in the packed council chambers as scores of rank-and-file employees, as well as residents and others, expressed opposition to human rights abuses, support for the fabled property, as well as a reliance on the hotel for jobs.

"This is misguided," Robert Anderson told Reuters after the vote. "We should be against human rights violations in all countries, not just the Brunei."

Badrul Chowdhury, a waiter at the hotel for 14 years, said Brunei was far removed from the lives of hotel workers: "We work. We take care of our families."

Brunei, a former British protectorate of about 400,000 run by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, last week became the first East Asian country to adopt the Islamic criminal law. It will punish offenses like sodomy and adultery with the death penalty, including by stoning.

The laws will be introduced in phases in the energy-rich country nestled between two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, with the harshest penalties going into effect in two years.

The U.S. government has been largely silent on the issue until Tuesday, when the State Department told reporters the ambassador to Brunei had privately relayed concerns to the government there about the law.

Through the resolution the council members were "adding their voice" to international outrage, said a spokeswoman.

The council stopped short of taking direct action, such as a city-sanctioned boycott.

In the last few days, organizations have canceled events at the hotel, including the Motion Picture & Television Fund's annual "Night Before the Oscars" charity event and the Feminist Majority Foundation's annual Global Women's Rights Awards.

Gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign on Tuesday called on the hotel's owner to stop promoting special services at the hotel for same-sex weddings, now legal in California.

"This is the height of hypocrisy, and we must ensure that profits from LGBT weddings in the U.S. stop going to a regime that could soon start executing its LGBT citizens," the group's president Chad Griffin said in a statement.

The Beverly Hills Hotel and nearby Hotel Bel-Air are part of the Dorchester Collection of luxury hotels that are owned by the Brunei Investment Agency, an arm of the Brunei government.

Christopher Cowdray, the chief executive of the London-based Dorchester Collection, said those protesting have ignored local hotels owned by countries with poor human rights records and that a boycott would ultimately hurt the local economy most.

"There are other hotel companies in this city that are owned by Saudi Arabia ... you know, your shirt probably comes from a country which has human rights issues," said Cowdray from Beverly Hills.

Famed Power Lunch Spot At The Beverly Hills Hotel Deserted Amid Brunei Backlash

Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge

On any ordinary weekday, every table at the Beverly Hills Hotel’s iconic Polo Lounge is filled to capacity with industry movers and shakers like Steven SpielbergAri Emanuel and Jeffrey Katzenberg, all regulars at the 73-year-old power spot. But these days, the room is a ghost town.

Caught in the middle of the ballooning Beverly Hills Hotel boycott -- a direct response to a decision by its owner, the Sultan of Brunei, to institute Sharia law in his country, which calls for the stoning to death of gays and adulterers -- a Hollywood Reporterfield trip on Wednesday for the midday meal found 1 p.m. to be as busy as 1 a.m.

STORY: Beverly Hills Hotel Boycott: The Economic Fallout

Major philanthropic events like the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Night Before the Oscars party, a luncheon for the Carousel of Hope Benefit, the J.J. Abrams-chaired Children’s Defense Fund gala and THR's own Women in Entertainment breakfast have already canceled bookings at the storied Pink Palace. Now, it seems, the mass shunning extends to the property's loyal power-lunching ranks.

Two hours earlier, an anonymous reservation call was placed, and a gracious female voice on the other end fielded the request for a highly sought-after booth for two. What would typically yield a "Sorry, we're booked" instead earned a cheerful "We'll do our absolute best!" For the eatery ranked No. 2 on THR’s 2014 Power Lunch survey, this did not bode well.

At a little past 1 p.m., these reporters' beat-up Japanese SUV pulled past rows of parked Maybachs, Aston Martins and Bentleys and was swiftly whisked off by one of the hotel's famously overworked valets, who on this day sat idle.

STORY: Beverly Hills Mayor: City Wants Hotel Under New Ownership

From the scene inside the hotel's circular lobby, one might not get the immediate sense that anything was wrong, as bright-eyed desk clerks described amenities to a smattering of arriving guests while a number of well-heeled patrons lounged nearby.

But upon entering the Polo Lounge, located to the far right of the lobby, it became instantly clear that something was amiss. The mossy green front room, including the mighty Booth 1 – a coveted piece of U-shaped real estate where Viacom chief Sumner Redstone has broken bread countless times with Tom Cruise – sat entirely empty.

In the middle of the lunch rush, a lonely pianist, tinkling out the likes of Coldplay’s “Spiderwebs” and “Nadia’s Theme” from The Young & the Restless, was accompanied only by wandering white-suited waiters with too little to do.

Whatever action there was took place on the outdoor patio, but a trio of friendly hostesses said getting a table there would require a wait. (Despite sunny skies and comfortable 66-degree temperatures, only about half the outside tables were occupied.) Instead, THR chose to be seated at a prime booth in the second, smaller dining room overlooking the terrace, where about one-third of the tables were filled.

THR took note of the slow scene to one employee, who dispiritedly acknowledged, with eyes surveying the atmosphere beyond us, “Yes, it’s been quiet these past few days.”

STORY: Beverly Hills Hotel Exec Says Hotel Is Being 'Unfairly Picked On'

The majority of the sparse crowd appeared to be hotel guests, not business lunchers: a long-haired rocker type and female companion in thigh-baring jean shorts; a man in his 60s whispering to a blonde man in his 20s; a South Asian family of four digging into a complimentary basket of crispy flatbread; two women in their 50s gossiping over a pink leftovers container.

And while business was still being conducted amid the low din of the dining room, a sense crept in that it was on a far more modest scale than usual. Non-disclosure agreements involving a potential true-life story, possibly for a made-for-TV movie, traded hands at a nearby table of four.

Star wattage was in short supply but not completely absent, as a single, recognizable actor held court in an outside booth, squeezed between three companions plotting career strategies: It was Dev Patel, star of HBO's The Newsroom and Slumdog Millionaire. A representative from Patel's camp said the London-based actor was in town on business and was completely unaware of the boycott, adding that he "has no intention of going back there."

Tucked not too far away in a corner table for two was Paris-born philanthropist Nicolas Berggruen, sometimes called “the homeless billionaire” for his penchant for living exclusively in luxury hotels. He dined with a friend.

STORY: The Hollywood Reporter's Top 25 Power Lunch Spots of 2014

An attentive server swooped in to take beverage orders and relay the specials, but THR stuck to the classics: the finely chopped McCarthy Salad ($33, named for Neil McCarthy, a polo player who frequented the lounge) and the Maine Lobster Salad ($39, refreshingly citrusy). Both arrived promptly and were delicious.

Dessert took us to the Fountain Coffee Room on the lower floor, the same legendary lunch counter where Marilyn Monroe once sipped on milkshakes. The signature Chocolate Coconut Cake was as moist as ever and the coffee strong. As for the clientele – four men, each engrossed in a solitary lunch – Sharia law seemed the furthest thing from their minds.

But upstairs, the mood was undeniable. In just one week, the Polo Lounge has transformed from one of Hollywood's hottest haunts into its loneliest luncheonette.

After dropping $11 million on a Beverly Hills mansion that once belonged to David Geffen, former eBay president Jeff Skoll has purchased the home next door for $6 million.

According to Variety, Skoll bought the Tudor-style house in an off-market deal that happened earlier this summer.

Not much is known about the property, though tax records show it has three bedrooms and three bathrooms over 3,038 square feet of space. There's also a large swimming pool in the backyard, though it's nothing compared to the luxurious setup in Skoll's current solar-panel-powered home. jeff skoll houses

It's unclear what Skoll plans to do with the property, but he certainly wouldn't be the first tech entrepreneur to buy multiple neighboring homes.

In 2013, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer bought a funeral home one block east from her home in Palo Alto.

In 2012, Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg paid $43 million in separate deals to buy four houses adjacent to his Palo Alto home. He's currently facing legal trouble over the purchases.
